Greater Shepparton City Council officially unveiled the pitch at Victory Park in St George's Road, Shepparton in February 2023, after working with the Afghan community and the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District for several years to find and construct a new playing area.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Gary Randhawa said Council’s Parks, Sport and Recreation team are proud to have developed this purpose built Sangi Rag pitch, which will be put to good use with games played multiple times per week.

“Many people in Greater Shepparton’s Afghan community are isolated from their families and friends after moving to Australia. Having a safe space to play this traditional sport is important for fostering social connections and keeping traditions alive,” he said.

How to play

Two teams of four or five compete by throwing rocks at a target from a distance.

Each player gets 10 throws, and whoever is closest to the target in each of the 10 rounds wins that round for their team.

Hitting the target directly earns double points and the team that reaches 10 points first is the winner.
